I was really surprised by its affordability, and if it was not made by Gelert, I would have probably dismissed this as being being a toy.
I couldn’t wait to give this tent a try, although I have to admit that I wasn’t convinced that anything for this sort of price would perform very well!
As it turns out, it is actually a really good quality tent, simplicity itself to put up, although if this is your first lightweight tent, you may have a little getting used to with the general size.
It’s not just me who thought it was great – there are tons of reviews on Amazon that are overwhelmingly positive. Nonetheless, I’ve left snippets from one of the very few less-positive reviews so you know what issues customers have occasionally encountered.

“Great value tent!”
Bought this tent to go cycle touring, and it fits the bill perfectly. Although I’m only 5′ tall, I got my son to try it (he’s normal size for a 24 year old man!) and he fitted comfortably. I did learn on the first night though that, due to the height,…Read more

The Gelert Solo turns out to be a really great entry-level lightweight tent. Key is understanding what it is, and isn’t, suitable for.
You’re not going to find it suitable for taking to a festival, as you’ll want something a bit more spacious, so you have somewhere to chill out. It really is rather a tight fit, especially if you are any taller than 6’1.
Think of it more as a bivvy tent. It’s more roomy than a bivvy, and is ideal if you are hiking or cycling, as the weight and packed size are amazing.
- Very easy to put up
- Excellent value
- Trusted Brand, with great support.
- Weighs just 1.5kg!
- Ideal for light-weight camping trips, fishing, hiking and cycling.
- The low profile means it is able to withstand surprisingly strong winds.
- Definitely wouldn’t recommend this if you were planning to spend a lot of time in your tent. (Although one Amazon reviewer says that he has lived in his for over 6 months…)
- Not really suitable for festivals.
- It is a very tight fit; forget about getting changed inside your tent!
All in all, an excellent buy, if you are thinking about getting into ultra-light camping, but don’t want to commit too much money to it yet. If there is another, more affordable, ultra-lightweight tent that is as effective as this one, I’m yet to find it! If you are a bit more flush for cash, though, you might like to take a look at the Terra Nova Competition. It’s more expensive, but is still far off breaking the bank!
